The music of Manuel M. Ponce reflects the soul of his native Mexico. He, along with other composers like Heitor Villa-Lobos from Brazil and Manuel De Falla from Spain, embraced the spirit of Nationalism by using folk themes and folk-inspired melodies to create great works of art. Ponce, who was a renowned folklorist, even used melodies from the pre-Hispanic era, exhibited in several of the pieces in this collection. Ponce himself, a brilliant pianist, is primarily remembered today as the composer of numerous important works for the guitar, most of which were dedicated to the great Spanish virtuoso Andres Segovia.
